Es ist die
Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges: Die Geschwister Jakob und Bärbel Selzer,
Bergmannskinder aus dem Schwarzwald, hat es ins Rheintal verschlagen. Sie
müssen nun ihren Weg im Leben finden.
Jakob verlässt das kleine Dorf Odelshofen und zieht in den Krieg. Endlose
Märsche und zermürbende Gefechte führen ihn immer weiter weg von seiner
geliebten Elisabeth. Wird er sie je wiedersehen? Oder wird die hübsche
Magdalena sein Herz erobern?
Elisabeth versucht indessen, mit ihrer Mutter den elterlichen Hof zu
bewirtschaften. Doch immer wieder werden ihr Steine in den Weg gelegt. Als ihre
Mutter als Hexe beschimpft wird, spitzt sich die Lage zu.
Das Straßburger Findelhaus hat inzwischen Zuwachs bekommen. Doch die Arbeit mit
den Kindern führt Bärbel und Sebastian an ihre Grenzen. Da bedroht eine Seuche
das Leben der Hausbewohner. Werden sie auch diese Prüfung bestehen?
